“Bringing Children in to Farming” – a KVK attempt Krishi Vigyan Kendra,Thrissur joined hands with Thumbur Co operative Society in the novel initiative of 'Kutti krishiyum kunjen pankum'- aiming at bringing the younger generation into farming. It is a one of its kind programme, where a Co-operative Society has taken up the social responsibility of inculcating the agrarian culture in children and scientific farming is being taught to them through the intervention of the KVK. Two hundred and fifty children are participants of the programme and each child has a small garden of vegetables as well as fruit plants such as banana and Pappaya. The aim is to ensure self sufficiency of each household in its need for safe to eat vegetables. The programme is taken up in a competitive way to encourage and ensure participation from children. They are made to note down daily field observations and this record is monitored, evaluated and the best young farmers are identified based on this record and physical field verification. A healthy competition has now developed in the society and the elders have joined the young ones in their agriculture, thus bringing a change in the agrarian culture of the area. KVK, Thrissur handholds the programme with technical guidance and also provides critical inputs such as seeds, organic manures and biofertilizers. The tree planting day was celebrated on 16.07.2021 to highlight the importance of planting trees to the young children of Thumbur and seedlings were planted in the locality, under the aegis of KVK Thrissur and the Thumbur Co-operative Society.
